In my decades of experience as a teacher and senior piano examiner, my philosophy revolves around challenging each student to reach their full potential while nurturing their love for learning the piano. I understand that every musical journey has its highs and lows, and I aim to guide parents in supporting, nurturing, and encouraging their children throughout the process. My goal is to help students develop their piano skills with a focus on love, discipline, grit, stamina, and musical enjoyment, always mindful of fostering their creativity. I prioritize detailed technical control, sensitivity to musical nuances, and expression, allowing students to create a captivating "concert sound" early on, unlocking a world of musical possibilities. This growth requires patience, nurturing, and individualized attention, while also fostering mutual respect and understanding. I am committed to avoiding any coercion in the learning process, delicately guiding students to discover their musical direction. Recognizing that each student is unique, I tailor my approach to their personality and abilities, allowing for natural growth and evolution over time. Setting high yet achievable goals, I encourage students to surpass themselves through music-making. When they are ready, I recommend participation in international music competitions, providing valuable performance experience and a sense of positive accomplishment. It's essential to emphasize that music exams, while a part of the journey, are not the ultimate goal. Instead, they serve as milestones showcasing a student's progress, complementing their musical development. I firmly believe that music comes from the heart and transcends standardized evaluation assessments. My teaching approach aims to instill a profound love for music, empowering students to realize their potential while ensuring they find joy in the process. Together with parents, we can create an enriching and rewarding musical journey that opens doors to exciting opportunities for their future. Sincerely, Dr. Angela Chan Ph.D.

My views on Music Examinations
Dear Parents, As an experienced teacher with over 40 years of teaching and 20 years as a senior piano examiner for RCM, I wanted to share some insights that I believe will benefit your children's musical journey. I understand that many of you are enthusiastic about having your kids take RCM music exams, as you believe it will significantly enhance their musical abilities and CVs. However, I feel it's essential to consider some practical aspects of these exams. RCM music exams require a vast amount of pieces and theory exams, which can sometimes lead to burnout or a loss of interest in playing the piano. As educators, our priority is not only to foster musical development but also to ensure our students enjoy and cherish their musical experiences. Moreover, while RCM music exams demonstrate a certain level of proficiency, they might not hold the same weight on CVs as some believe. In the realm of education administrators and admission officers, other achievements and experiences might be valued more highly when considering college applications or pursuing a career in music. Instead, I encourage you to explore alternative paths that can bring greater recognition on an international platform. Participating in international music exams and achieving success in such competitions can instantly elevate your child's CV and demonstrate their musical abilities to a broader audience. To gain a more comprehensive understanding, I suggest speaking to education administrators and admission officers. This way, you can obtain valuable insights on how different achievements and experiences are assessed in the context of education and future opportunities. As a teacher, my utmost concern is the well-being and development of your children. If you still feel strongly about pursuing RCM music exams, I will gladly refer you to a teacher who specializes in preparing students exclusively for those exams. However, I believe that a well-rounded musical education, including participation in international competitions, can provide your child with valuable skills and experiences that go beyond the scope of any single exam. Let's work together to ensure your children's musical journey is fulfilling, enjoyable, and opens doors to exciting opportunities for their future. Sincerely, Dr. Angela Chan Ph.D.
